300 500 adding Tach

Adding a Dayton Velona tachometer to a Rebel 300 / 500

Daytona Velona tach

For 2017-2019 Rebel 300/500, 92569 (48 mm) or 17252 (60 mm).

For the 2020-2024 Rebel 300/500, 17283/39913 (48 mm) or 17284/39914 (60 mm).

Prep – It’s better if your gas tank is not full. You will need an 8mm or 5/16 inch Allen wrench to un-bolt the tank.

First, loosen or remove the two speedometer bolts – be careful to break the thread lock seal FIRST before turning the bolts – heating the bolts with a soldering gun might help. Do not hammer the bolts too hard or you might break the mounts that they bolt to. You might need to remove your windshield (I did). …. Use the included mounting plate to mount the tach to the upper left handlebar bolt. Use the Daytona-supplied longer bolt and collar.

For the 2017 to 2019 Rebel 300/500, you need to raise the tank to get to the ECU connection for the tach install. It requires soldering or a quick-connector. The 2020-up years is easier – you still need to raise the tank – the tach connects to the green wire on an ignition coil which is under the tank on the left side.

The 4 photos below show underneath the gas tank.

Wiring code: Black ground, Red power, White ECU (if no white, then yellow), Blue not used, Green not used.

Shown above – The Velona 48 ECU signal wire is yellow for the #92569 that I bought Oct 2022. The Velona 60 ECU signal wire is white for a #17252 bought ~2020.

Power and Ground connections: The 2017-19 models have an accessory power connector in the headlight bucket on the right side. Looking at the right-side connectors, it is second from the left – I believe the first connector on the left is a blue connector. After connecting, put the black plug cap in the remaining connector (the larger of the two) .. OR you can use the connector for something like driving lights. If you don’t buy the proper plug, you can use two 2.8mm spade female connectors. 2.8mm is the inside width; if the outside width is 3mm, you can re-use the blank plug to hold the two connectors. The ones I had were an outside width of 4mm, so I just used them without the blank plug as a shell, and they worked fine.

Power and Ground connections: For the 2020-up models, remove the black tape from the common 4.0mm bullet connectors [female positive (black/blue)/ male negative (black)] which are below the speedometer and plug the power and ground wires here. This connection switches on and off with the ignition switch.

Rebel 300 ECU connect tach to blue-yellow ECU wire which is for the coil.

Rebel 500 ECU connect tach to blue-yellow or yellow ECU wire which is for the coils.

You can just wire your tach wire to the blue-yellow or yellow ECU wire without cutting the wire. Or you can cut the wire and solder in the provided connectors so you can then just plug in to both sides of the ECU wire.

trouble-shooting tip: per Daytona, the wire from the ECU to the tach should show a resistance of 1MΩ.

Remove the tank bolt (using 8mm or 5/16 inch Allen wrench). Slide the tank about 2 inches backward until it comes off the mounting “ears”. At this point, you are raising the tank slightly so you can make the wiring connection without removing the tank. Put a cloth under the left side of the tank and carefully lay it on its left side. You can attach bungee cords under the tank to the right side to prevent it from falling.

for 2017-2019 models – See pics – push the 3 tabs and lift up the connector plate an inch or two so you have more room to solder. The third wire from the right on the ECU connector (which is a yellow wire) is the wire. Leaving the wire and connector attached, carefully trim the yellow wire so another wire can be soldered to it.

For 2020-up models – they connect to the green wire on an ignition coil.

Instructions for use – see below.

Things you need to furnish (do not come with tach):  1) possibly a 24 inch length of wire to reach the ECU connection and 2) clear tubing to run the wire through.

See photo below – notice how the wiring with #17284 (2020-up) looks the same as the wiring with 2017-2019 models.
