Reference – CANbus system

The 1100 has a CAN Bus system for monitoring specific sensors but there is no accessory port connected to CAN system like the BMW DIN plug. So to hook up your Optimate 4 dual mode charger to the 1100 get a SAE pigtail connector and attach it directly to the battery posts and route the the connector end to a convenient location so you can plug the charger in. Switch the charger to Mode 1.

Same can be done to the BMW so you don’t need a special CAN Bus charger.

The 1100 does have a DLC connector to read data from the CAN Bus system to read error codes and display live data on gauges on your cell phone. According to the service manual the 1100 has 102 possible error codes.

Tapping into the Rebel 1100 OBD system via the bikes DLC connector – I bought a Nexas Bluetooth 5.0 OBD2 scanner and a 6 pin Honda to 16 pin OBD2 adapter cable from online vendors (Google search each for several vendor/pricing choices).
I installed the Torque Lite OBD app from the Play Store and paired the scanner and app.
See Torque Lite app for full details.
Lots of parameters to be read from the ECU with individual gauges you can set up on your cell screen.
Read error codes.

scanner hooked up to the DLC
scanner is small and can be tucked under the side cover and with your cell mounted on the handlebar you can monitor the gauges.
some of the parameters listed in last picture below

tried this Car Scanner ELM ODB2 app out too…like it a bit better than the Torque Lite app

the GPS data for the app gauges is taken from the phones receiver

Some vehicles have sophisticated charging systems that monitor battery condition and adjust the charge current for longest battery life. A quick charge might upset the onboard monitoring but a maintenance charge is always good. Just make sure it’s set for AGM and not AGM+ which is a higher output for those self-starting cars that cut out and restart at every stop light.

red color connector is under the seat…you can’t miss it.

you’ll need a OBD2 to Honda DLC port adapter cable to use with a car scanner or motorcycle specific OBD2 scanner.

Another option to read error codes on the Rebel is through a blink code flashed on the MIL light on the speedometer. No need for any tools…just a jumper wire. Get a copy of an official Honda Rebel service manual ($25) for details on procedure. Based on blink code the manual has a chart that indicates the problem and how to test the component creating the fault.
