every 500 miles – lube chain
every 1,000 miles – clean and lube chain.
Do it more often in dusty conditions.
To clean or lube the chain, you need to be able to spin the rear wheel, so you need to raise the rear wheel with a paddock stand or just spin the wheel using a roller (photo below).
To clean the chain, spin the rear wheel and spray the chain with Chain Cleaner (made by Maxima, Motul, and others). If still dirty, wipe with a rag and then spray the chain with Chain Cleaner again. When chain is dry, spin the wheel and spray chain with Chain Lube (such as PJ1 or Maxima Chain Wax). When lube is dry, bike is ready to ride.
See link near bottom of page for how to clean and lube your chain.
