Oil Change – Rebel 500

Prep before the day you change your oil:
1) Buy an oil filter like a KN-204 that has a built in 17mm nut for easy install/removal. Honda OEM oil filter is 15410-MFJ-D02 ??
2) Make sure you have an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter – if not, buy one.
3) Buy an aluminum crush washer (inner diameter 12mm)

4) If possible, use a six point 12mm socket for the drain bolt. If your drain bolt is worn/rounded, a twelve point socket might slip.

Oil and filter should be changed every 8,000 miles or 1 year

Honda recommends 10w30 (but many owners use 10w40 or 15w40) …. I always use Rotella T4 15-40 Heavy Duty diesel oil (non-synthetic)

Torque: Drain bolt 22 lbs/ft (12mm wrench or socket)

Torque: Oil filter 19 lbs/ft (It seemed too high so I tightened mine to about 12 lbs/ft)

I had planned to re-use the old crush washer, but it fell into the drain pan – so make sure you buy one beforehand. Buy an aluminum crush washer (inner diameter 12mm). You can get them from Amazon.

The Rebel 500 holds 2.9 quarts of oil with filter change.

Rebel 300: After draining 1.5 US qt (1.4 L)
After draining & filter change 1.6 US qt (1.5 L)

other: OEM air filter 17220-KZZ-900. Spark plug NGK CPR8EA-9

Rotella T4 15w-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil – is the oil I always use. This is a good choice for street motorcycles that have a shared sump (engine and transmission uses the same oil). Heavy Duty Diesel (truck) oil is friction-modifier free, so the clutch won’t slip. It has more detergents and a more heavy duty additive package.

I normally put in about one quart Valvoline VR1 20w-50 Racing Oil and 2 quarts Rotella T4. (This mix is per long-time Yamaha mechanic John Underwood (xsjohn) –  “great oil, reduced engine noise, can’t use 100% VR1 since it is so slick and has so much zinc in it can make the clutch slip”).

(additional info: Rotella T4 is non-synthetic. Rotella T5 and T6 are synthetic. T6 has more viscosity modifiers that get broken down quickly in a transmission – since it wasn’t designed for that. T4 lasts longer in a transmission.)

Check to see if filter is 64mm (other choice is 74mm)
