I like a bike to be just a little louder than stock (maybe 20%). I drive through a lot of neighborhoods, and with loud pipes I have to drive like a grandma. With quieter mufflers, I can rev it up more. …… …… I’m pretty sure that any aftermarket muffler would be louder than the stock muffler with holes drilled. If the aftermarket mufflers are too loud for you, the stock muffler gives you a nice deep tone and some flexibility with how loud you want it (hole placement and size). You can drill out the baffle with a drill extension, or drill a hole underneath the muffler. Start with a 3/8 inch hole. If it is not loud enough, enlarge it to 1/2 inch or larger.

What I did: I removed the muffler end cap – when I drilled it out, I was left with three 3/8 inch holes. That was a little louder than stock. Then I enlarged the two lower holes to 1/2 inch. That was a little more louder than stock. It still sounds quiet at low speeds, but I could hear it better on the road. The stock muffler has a nice deep tone, which you might not get with aftermarket mufflers – especially the smaller ones. ….. ….. If I want it louder, I can drill the holes out bigger and/or drill out the baffle with a drill extension.
